Our Story
Behind the name of Mr Maggie is Steve Amos. Steve has certainly lived an interesting life, and his story is one that has taken him from some very difficult beginnings to where he is today.
Steve is the author of From the Pit of Hell, a book telling the story of his own experiences and the very difficult path he found himself on in his younger years. His life took him through addiction, crime and prison before a near-death experience became a turning point that changed the direction of his life. The book tells a story of second chances, finding his Christian faith and turning his life around from a seemingly unrecoverable situation.
It's quite a story and one that those close to Steve know very well.
From Bikes to Books
But writing a book wasn't the only thing Steve was known for!
For years, he was known as the local motorcycle man, running his own motorcycle business from the very premises where Maggie's Tea Room now stands.
Steve sold, repaired, and serviced bikes for people all over the country. For many years, he was proud to be the official dealer for AJS Motorcycles, building a loyal customer base and a place where motorcycle enthusiasts loved to drop by, chat, and share stories.
And then, like so many businesses, everything changed.
When one door closed...
As with everyone lockdown brought an unexpected change.
Mr Maggie's bad leg meant he had to step away from the motorcycle business, the bikes left and eventually made way for something completely different.
And that's where Mrs Maggie comes in...
For years, she had always dreamed of having a tea room of her own. It was one of those ideas that had been talked about for years, and when the opportunity came she promptly took it
The old motorcycle premises were given a new lease of life, and what had once been filled with motorcycles began to fill with the smell of fresh food, cups of tea and plenty of conversation instead.
And that's where Maggie's Tea Room comes in
Today, Maggie's Tea Room is a little bit of everything that has come before it.
So whether you're here for a pot of freshly brewed tea, A delicious perfectly toasted cheese and chutney sandwich, a slice of cake, or just a friendly chat, Everyone's always welcome at Maggie's.
